Hair Transplant Questions Answers

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers on hair transplantation which are asked to Dr ARSLAN Musbeh, Surgeon Specializing in Baldness and Hair Transplant Treatments.

1. Who is A Good Candidate For Hair Transplantation?

The process of a hair transplant involves removing hair follicles from the donor area and moving them to the recipient area. For this reason, you need to have some hair on the sides of your hair or the back of your head to be a good candidate for a hair transplant. Your surgeon may have trouble performing this procedure if your baldness is so widespread that it’s difficult to find a donor site to extract the hair from since the hair on the side or back of your head makes a good spot for a donor.

You must meet certain requirements to be a good candidate for hair transplantation. You might be a good candidate to try a hair transplant treatment if you are any of the following:

  1. If you have thinning hair, limited hair loss, or well-defined baldness
  2. If you encountered hair loss due to a head or scalp injury or repeated cosmetic procedures
  3. If you are facing male pattern baldness
  4. If you are a woman with thinner hair

Considering the information we have given above, you may consult your doctor and choose the course of treatment if you meet one of the requirements we stated. The majority of hair transplant clinics, like Hairmedico in Turkey, provide a team that you may speak with both before and after the procedure. Before making a choice, your doctor will discuss it with you in terms of your expectations, the best course of action, and potential results.

However, bear in mind that if you fall into one of the following categories, your doctor will probably recommend against performing hair transplantation:

  1. If you have a major hair loss
  2. If the cause of hair loss is chemotherapy or medication
  3. If you don’t have a donor area to transfer the hair follicles due to major baldness

2. What Results Should I Expect After Hair Transplantation?

Your transplanted hair will most likely fall out between two and four weeks after the hair transplant process. Transplanted hair sheds as it adjusts to its new position. This process is called shock hair loss.  But don’t worry; your doctor will explain that this is a regular hair growth stage and one of the common outcomes of hair transplantation.

After the healing process, which typically takes 6 months to witness the growth of recently implanted follicles, your new hair will begin to become apparent. You will experience the best hair transplant outcomes 12 months following the procedure, taking into account your health issues, the type of hair you have, and any infections that may arise throughout the healing period.

Remember that you can experience a few side effects after the operation. After surgery, you may encounter pain, an infection, or problems like bleeding or swelling in the surgical sites. However, these side effects are only temporary, and if you start taking the medications your surgeon recommends, you will quickly recover. Make sure to speak with your doctor after the treatment and follow their advice to avoid them and ensure a safe recovery process.

3. What is The Cost of Hair Transplant in Turkey?

According to the procedures used by successful hair transplantation clinics like Hairmedico, the cost may change based on the method you and your doctor decide to use in Turkey. The price of a DHI hair transplant will be in the range of $2,000 and $10,000. Your expectations and the volume of hair transplanted will affect the price.

On the other hand, an FUE hair transplant costs between $1500 and $3000. The average cost of a hair transplant in Turkey is $2500, which is less expensive than most countries when compared to the US and other European nations.

Does the hair taken from the donor area grow back in this area?

The hair that is extracted from the donor area (back of the head) DOESN’T GROW IN this area (or in very small quantities)! Each patient has a limited stock of hair that can be removed and implanted over several hair transplant sessions. The doctor must therefore analyze the progression of the patient’s baldness in order to possibly plan other sessions in the future. It should not damage this area by removing too many grafts.

How long does an FUE hair transplant operation take?

The duration of an FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant procedure can vary depending on the number of hair follicles being transplanted and the complexity of the case. In general, an FUE procedure can take anywhere from a few hours to an entire day to complete.

The FUE procedure is usually done in stages, with breaks in between to allow the surgeon to rest and ensure that the hair follicles are being transplanted properly. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove individual hair follicles from the donor site using a small punch tool and transplant them to the recipient site, where they will grow new hair.

The length of the procedure can also be affected by factors such as the skill and experience of the surgeon, the size of the treatment area, and the overall health of the patient. It is important to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon to perform the FUE procedure to ensure the best results and minimize the risk of complications.

After a hair transplant is it still visible?

A well-done hair transplant is not detectable if the surgeon practices the correct graft distribution technique and uses the right material depending on the quality of the hair. FUE hair transplant leaves no visible mark on the end result. However, scabs and redness for about ten days after the transplant will be visible.

What is the price of a hair transplant?

The price of a hair transplant is per procedure and not per number of grafts. A quote will be sent to you after analysis and level of baldness.
What is the Difference Between FUE and DHI
There are 2 implantation methods in the FUE Hair Transplant Technique which means removing grafts one by one from the donor area at the back of the head. Once the grafts have been removed, we therefore move on to the implantation stage:
1– The implantation technique using tweezers. In this case, small very fine incisions are made on the bald areas using a sapphire scalpel (FUE Saphir incisions), then the grafts are placed in these incisions using tweezers.
2 – The DHI technique (Direct Hair Implant) which is a method of implantations using an implanter pen. The grafts are placed in the pens and are then injected into the scalp without prior incision.
For the 2 implantation methods, the general method therefore remains given the FUE.

What is the difference between hair implantation and graft implantation?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplantation is a technique of removing grafts one by one from the back of the head at the crown. This technique makes it possible to obtain several thousand grafts of 1 to 3 hairs each which will then be reimplanted one by one as tight as possible to bring maximum density to the recipient area.
The graft is defined as the bulb in which the hair grows. In each bulb there can be 1 to 3 hairs, sometimes more.
We must therefore distinguish between reimplantation of hair and reimplantation of grafts, since a graft contains between 1 to 3 hairs.

After a Hair Transplant can I go in the sun at the beach and the swimming pool?

The intervention of hair transplant or beard transplant can be considered all year round provided you avoid the swimming pool for 1 month (because of chlorine), the sea for 15 days and avoid staying too long in the sun during the healing period which is approximately 15 days. You should protect your head by wearing a cap or hat during this period.

How quickly can you see the final result of a hair transplant?

The implanted hair will fall out after 1 month due to the shock of moving the grafts to its new location. Regrowth of new hair will start from the 3rd month. The result of an FUE hair transplant is visible from the 5th month. For the final result it will be after 1 year.

Can you drive after an FUE hair transplant?

After an FUE micro hair transplant, you can renew without any problem the next day.

How is the first online hair transplant consultation?

Just send us some photos of the different areas to be treated as well as the donor area (hair area at the back of the head). You will also be asked a few questions to determine the causes of hair loss. The photos are then analyzed by the doctor. A detailed quote will then be sent to you.

I lose more and more hair every day. When should I consider an intervention?

It is normal to lose an average of 80 hairs per day. There are events that can increase the number of hairs lost every day due to stress, nutritional deficiency, change of seasons, etc. The cause must be determined with blood tests or see if the baldness is hereditary in the family. The doctor can then tell if the loss of your hair is temporary or if it is permanent.

Under what type of anesthesia is FUE hair transplant performed?

Fue hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia. You are fully aware at all stages of the procedure which is therefore painless. Only the first injections of anesthesia are painful, a bit like at the dentist.

What is the FUE hair transplant method?

The Follicular Extraction Unit (FUE) hair transplant is a surgical procedure that restores hair to a bald area.
It is done by removing the grafts, i.e. the bulb one by one using a fine micro-punch (from 0.7 to 0.9 mm in diameter depending on the quality of the hair) directly from the donor area to the back of the head at the crown.
This technique makes it possible to obtain several thousand grafts of 1 to 3 hairs each which will then be reimplanted one by one to provide maximum density in the recipient area. Thus, the bald area will regain natural hair.
This hair transplant technique is nowadays the most effective technique to treat permanent hair loss. There is no risk of rejection as these are the patient’s own grafts.

Under what criteria is the number of grafts defined for a hair transplant?

The number of follicles to be collected is determined according to the age of the patient, the potential evolution of his baldness, the limited capacity or not of the donor area. The result of a hair transplant with good density therefore also depends on the capacity of this area.

How long does it take to resume sport after a hair transplant?

After a hair transplant, it is possible to resume sport after 1 month. It is important to avoid any shock to the area of implantation and to avoid blood pressure so as not to compromise the healing of the hair implants.
