The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Technique
The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique is a technique of graft picking by using a fine micro-punch (0.7 to 0.9 mm diameter depending on the quality of the hair) in order to take them directly from the back of the head. This technique thus makes possible to obtain several thousand micrografts of 1 to 3 hairs which will then each be implanted in the area to be grafted. It is done under local anesthesia and is painless.
It involve 3 operating times:
1) The graft picking:
The picking is usually carried out manually at the level of the previously shaved crown. Thus, grafts contain often 1 to 2 hairs (ultra-micrografts), which are temporarily stored in a preservative solution before being implanted, are extracted directly from the crown. This picking step is the longest, it lasts several hours to obtain several thousand grafts.
2) Preparation of the balding area:
It consists of making on balded area numerous small incisions which are about 1 millimeter wide, called slits, using a sapphire micro-slide or a triple bevel needle.
3) The implantation of the grafts:
It consists of placing the micro-grafts very carefully one by one in each incision using a micro-clamp or a special implanter. Each graft is then inserted into the slot provided for the purpose at several millimeters deepth by adapting to its receiving site in a perfectly anchored and stabilized manner so that only the superficial part of the hair is visible on the surface. The ultra-micrografts of 1 hair are preferably placed first on the hairline, those containing more than 2 hairs are placed further back.
At the end of the procedure, the appearance of the grafted zone is very discreet. The picking area where the grafts were taken from will leave many small holes of a diameter less than a millimeter. Those holes will heal spontaneously leaving small scars or white spots that are almost invisible because they are hidden by hairs in the area.
The duration of the intervention largely depends on the time taken to collect the grafts. It takes about from 6 to 8 hours of intervention for about 4000 grafts.
